Looking at pros, cons of coed dorm living
Dear Readers: We recently printed some information on the subject of coed college roommates. We thought we would share some reader input we have since received:
UGoing to college is a huge lifestyle adjustment. High school was safely living at home with parents and supervision of teenage angst. College is budgeting time between classes, studying, caring for your own quarters, possibly part-time work and dating. Returning to single-sex quarters provides safety to study and relax without members of the opposite sex bringing home friends, walking around in various stages of undress, etc. I don't recommend coed apartments for young people just testing their wings away from the safety of home. Marilyn Jewell, Concord, N.H.
UI have three daughters, all of whom had roommates of the opposite sex while in college and even after college. There were no romantic attachments, and it gave me peace of mind that they had a & quot;protector & quot; there. Gloria Quackenbush, Houston
UI am so glad my daughters are grown, married and mothers themselves. College living is bad enough and tempting enough without allowing coed roommates. Mama in Lancaster, Calif.
UWhile I wouldn't want an unfamiliar man for a roommate in a private apartment, I am all for coed dorms. I lived on coed-dorm floors for all four years of college. After the first week, it was just like living with my brother at home. If there were major personality conflicts or personal issues, floor advisers and college staff were there to help. It was also a great opportunity for students who did not have siblings of the opposite gender to learn to live with each other. Coed in Houston
Dear Heloise: To keep lettuce crisp longer, I take a paper towel and pat the lettuce dry after washing it. I also keep a layer of paper towel in the lettuce crisper to absorb any excess moisture. Michelle Robinson, Baraboo, Wis.
