COLUMBIANA COUNTY Projects benefit from estate gift
Upkeep to the swimming pool and a new scoreboard came from the foundation.
COLUMBIANA -- An estate gift of $1 million has more than doubled the assets of the Columbiana Community Foundation.
Foundation officials said the gift is from the estate of Lucille Funkhouser Mundy to establish the Funkhouser-Mundy Memorial Fund.
Mundy's father, Edgar Funkhouser, served as president of the former Union Bank for many years. Her husband was Paul Mundy.
Foundation officials said Lucille Mundy taught music for many years in the Columbiana schools and gave private piano and organ lessons.
She previously established the Lucille Funkhouser-Mundy Music Award for Columbiana High School graduates interested in vocal or instrumental music. Although she expressed hope that this estate gift would help Columbiana community in the development of community concerts and assist local young people with music instruction, she placed no restrictions on the use of the fund.
The Foundation was established in 1986. Since that time, the interest from various Foundation funds has been used for various charitable and educational projects.
What's benefiting from money
The Rev. Charles Ready, public information officer for the Foundation, said some examples of uses of Foundation money include upkeep on the swimming pool at Firestone Park, purchase of a scoreboard for the Firestone Park baseball field, home of the Columbiana High School baseball team, and various academic and athletic scholarships for Columbiana and Crestview high school students.
Anyone can become a lifetime member of the Foundation with a $100 gift. Members receive an annual report and attend the membership meeting held each year in April.
