The American Cancer Society offers several programs to help people deal with having cancer. Among them:
REACH TO RECOVERY, which matches breast cancer patients with breast cancer survivors who provide counseling, support and comfort. Reach to Recovery volunteers must be one year past their treatment, be approved by a physician and attend ACS training. Breast cancer patients can be referred to Reach to Recovery by a physician or nurse, or they can contact the ACS themselves by calling toll free (800) 227-2345 or (330) 533-0546.
FOCUS (Friends Offering Compassionate Understanding Support), an extension of Reach to Recovery, is designed to meet the ongoing needs of women who have experienced breast cancer. It is a peer support group.
I Can Cope: A series of educational classes for people with cancer and their families and friends.
Look Good ... Feel Better: Representatives of the Cosmetic Toiletry and Fragrance Association Foundation, and the National Cosmetology Association teach female cancer patients beauty techniques to help restore their appearance and self-image during cancer treatments.
