NOTEBOOK | From Browns Stadium
Late scratch: Rookie wide receiver Braylon Edwards, the Browns' top draft pick last April, missed Sunday's game with an infection in his elbow. The Browns noticed the swelling in his elbow after Saturday's practice and took him to Cleveland Clinic, where doctors cleaned out the infection and treated him with antibiotics. Browns coach Romeo Crennel expected Edwards to stay in the hospital on Sunday night. "I'm sure he's disappointed because I know he wanted to be part of a victory," Crennel said. "But he's still part of the team and we're looking forward to a speedy recovery." Other inactives were defensive backs Leigh Bodden and Antonio Perkins, linebacker Nick Speegle, offensive linemen Dave Yovanovits and Nat Dorsey and tight end Billy Miller.
He said what? Browns wide receiver Antonio Bryant was asked if dropping a touchdown pass in the loss to the Colts two weeks ago carried over into the Bears game. "I can't control what happened in Indianapolis," Bryant said. "If I had dropped a few more, then my teammates would have looked at me like, Hey, you've gotta check yourself. But they gave me some opportunities and I took him and they were like, Hey, that's the AB we know."
Pulling no punches: Quarterback Trent Dilfer didn't get an easy question to start his press conference. A few seconds after he sat down, a reporter asked him, "Could you talk about how you were able to throw two touchdown passes out of thin air?" The question got a laugh out of Dilfer, who said, "When you're not playing well as a quarterback, what you learn is you can't panic." (That works well after the game, too.)
Milestones: Dilfer made his 100th career start and threw his 100th career touchdown pass. He has a 55-45 record as a starter and has won 28 of his last 38 starts, including a Super Bowl win over the Giants while he was the Ravens' quarterback in January 2001. "It took me longer to get there than some guys," Dilfer said of the TD milestone. "It has been a fun ride and it is really just beginning right now. I am enjoying the game as much as ever. I think about that more than what I have done."
Up next: The Browns travel to play the Baltimore Ravens next Sunday followed by a home game against the Detroit Lions on Oct. 23. Both games have 1 p.m. starts.
