Pirates to interviewMacha, Tracy
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Pirates, narrowing their search for former manager Lloyd McClendon's successor, will interview former Athletics manager Ken Macha today and former Dodgers manager Jim Tracy on Monday.
The Pirates begin their annual postseason organizational meetings at their spring training complex in Bradenton, Fla., on Tuesday, and it is possible they will have a manager in place at some point during the meetings.
Pirates general manager Dave Littlefield appears to have focused his search on Tracy from the start, but said he wants to have at least one in-person interview with his new manager or perhaps two.
Tracy and Littlefield talked by phone at least once for several hours last week, but their first formal interview was delayed so Tracy could attend his son's high school football game in California on Friday.
Kahne winsBusch race
KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Greg Biffle elected not to nudge Kasey Kahne out of contention during their late side-by-side duel in Saturday's Busch race, and Kahne edged ahead just yards from the finish line for the victory at Kansas Speedway.
The margin of victory -- .03 seconds -- was the fifth-closest since they implemented electronic timing in 1993.
Golf roundup
* SAN FRANCISCO -- John Daly relied on the long ball to get back into contention, then to take the lead away from Colin Montgomerie on Saturday in an American Express Championship.
Daly hit a 378-yard drive that set up an eagle on the par-5 10th, ripped a 292-yard drive into the stiff wind for a chip-and-putt birdie on the par-4 16th.
He finished his turbulent day at Harding Park with a 3-under 67 for a one-shot lead over Montgomerie.
Tiger Woods somehow finished two shots behind.
Daly, who started with a bogey and a double bogey on his first three holes, was at 9-under 201 and poised to capture his first victory in 19 months.
Montgomerie, who only last week ended his 19-month victory drought, closed with 10 straight pars for a 69 and was at 202, giving him another tee time with Daly today.
