Hazardous waste
CANFIELD -- The Recycling Division of Mahoning County will have a household hazardous waste collection from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Canfield Fairgrounds. Mahoning County residents can enter through Gate 9, off state Route 46. No explosives or tires will be accepted. Items being collected are pesticides, insecticides, used motor oil, poisons, solvents, gasoline, car batteries, aerosol cans, antifreeze, propane cylinders, greases, thinners, fluorescent light bulbs and household cleaners.
Lead awareness
WARREN -- The Trumbull County Lead Task Force is sponsoring a free Lead Awareness Health Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at Packard Music Hall, 1703 Mahoning Ave. The goal of the health fair is to raise public awareness about the effects of lead poisoning on learning, hearing and behavior and on the brain, kidneys and other organs. Lead screenings for children age 1 through 6, hands-on demonstrations and information booths for children and adults will be provided at the health fair. Other activities that day will be a Halloween bag giveaway, Warren Police Department K-9 Unit demonstration and identification kits, Warren Fire Department fire safety trailer and truck demonstration and Help Me Grow free developmental screenings for children 6 and younger.
Domestic violence
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Crisis Shelter of Lawrence County is holding a domestic violence rally at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at First Christian Church, downtown, as part of Domestic Violence Awareness month. The rally will educate the community on the effects of abuse and the devastation that domestic violence has on families. The rally will include a dramatic candle-lighting ceremony to remember and honor victims and survivors of domestic violence and testimony from one domestic violence survivor. The event also will include a pasta dinner.
Publications sale
SHARON, Pa. -- Books, magazines, videos and other items will be on sale at the Shenango Valley Community Library on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The Friends of the Library is sponsoring the sale ,and proceeds will go to by new books for the library at East State Street and Sharpsville Avenue. The sale will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
