CROSS COUNTRY Scullion, Clary win races, lead Salem to MAC titles
The Cardinal Mooney girls won the Diocesean championship.
SALEM -- Salem High seniors Aiman Scullion and Deirdre Clary won individual titles to lead the Quakers to boys and girls team titles at Saturday's Metro Athletic Conference cross country championships.
Scullion's winning time of 15 minutes, 44 seconds was almost a minute faster than teammate Patrick Gorby (16:30). Poland's Jimmy Ramson was third, followed by Salem's Paul Shivers, Struthers' Bob Zanni, Canfield's Anthony Fusco and Salem's Mike Overholser.
On the girls side, the Quakers took the top four spots and five of the top six, led by Clary's winning time of 19:22. Liz Shivers (19:30), Alexis Thorne and Lauren Shivers placed 2-3-4, followed by Poland's Lauren Fithian and the Quakers' Erin Murphy.
Tri-County League
EAST PALESTINE -- East Palestine junior Scott Wolfe won the boys individual title with a time of 18:11 and Lisbon edged the Bulldogs for the team title at the Tri-County League championships.
Lisbon junior Kyle Crimson (18:22) was second, followed by Columbiana senior Aaron Brown, Lisbon sophomore Justin Rupp and East Palestine senior Ryan Hartford.
Columbiana freshman Stephanie Case won the girls individual title with a time of 21:26 and East Palestine won the team title.
United sophomore Ellen Stryffeler was second (22:13), followed by East Palestine sophomore Elizabeth Kelvington, Bulldog freshman Sam Kennedy and Eagle senior Angela Burch.
Diocesean championships
CANTON -- The Mooney High girls placed four runners in the top eight positions to win the Diocesean title with 30 points.
The host Canton Central Catholic team, with the Crusaders' Ashley Marshall (20:48) winning the 5,000 meters, placed second.
Mooney's Lauren Finnerty 21:02 finished second and the Cardinals' Christina Oles (21:03) was third. Angela Urchak (21:04) was fourth and Katie Lisko (21:39) was eighth.
Colin Durina (16:49) and John Finnerty (16:53) placed 1-2 in the boys run for Mooney, which finished second with 51 points.
Andrew Sellers of the Crusaders (17:43) finished third in leading Central to the boys title with 32 points.
Western Reserve Invitational
BERLIN CENTER -- Jake DiEugenio (17:27), A.J. Keeley (18:36), Hugo Mendez (18:42), and Scott Chaffee (18:43) were first, fifth, sixth and seventh in leading Western Reserve to the boys championship with 45 points.
Doug Miller (17:44) placed second as South Range finished second.
Caitlin Sharp (19:33) ran away with the girls title, leading East Canton A to the team championship.
Badger's Samantha Bonar (20:46) was second and South Range's Kayla Witmer (20:48) was third.
