JOHN CARROLL
Jeff Johnston, a senior fullback for the John Carroll football team from South Range High, played a role in the Blue Streaks' 50-25 win over seventh-ranked Ohio Northern Oct. 1. Johnston caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Doug Phillips in the first half. John Carroll rallied for 28 unanswered points in the second half to post a 50-25 win for a 3-1 record, including 2-1 in the OAC. Last year, Johnston had four receptions for 16 yards and won his second letter. In 2003, he had 33 all-purpose yards. The son of Tami and Jeff Johnson, Jeff is majoring in biology and has a 3.7 grade-point average.
In women's soccer, junior Jenny Sopkovich (Girard) scored an insurance goal in John Carroll's recent 2-0 win at Defiance. Sopkovich took a short pass from junior Erin Gregorzewski and then scored. Through 12 games, Sopkovich is the team's fourth-leading scorer with five points on two goals and one assist, helping the Blue Streaks to a 5-7 record (0-1 OAC). Last year, she scored three points on one goal and on assist. In 2003, Sopkovich had six points on two goals and two assists. For her career, she has 14 points on five goals and four assists.
MUSKINGUM
Julianne Asley Noll (Poland) is a freshman midfielder for the Muskingum College women's soccer team. Noll played in seven of the Muskies' first 11 games and tied for third on the team in scoring with six points on one goal and four assists. She helped Muskingum to a 6-5 record, including 0-1 in the OAC. Noll is the daughter of Janice and Robert Noll.
In football, Muskingum College has six area players on the roster. The delegation consists of junior Vince Dravecky, a defensive lineman from Boardman; sophomores Walt Lacey, defensive back from Ursuline; Jon Roden, defensive lineman from Girard; and R.J. Wills, wide receiver from Lisbon; and freshmen Josh Hines, defensive back from Liberty; and Patsy Piscitella, offensive lineman from Mohawk.
EDINBORO
Julie Nemergut (South Range) helped the Edinboro University of Pennsylvania women's cross country team to place second out of 24 teams in the Gold Division of the 50th annual Notre Dame Invitational. Nemergut clocked 18:33 over the 5K course to place 22nd overall and second-best on the team, as the Fighting Scots scored 173 points behind Michigan (60). Cincinnati was third with 181 while Indiana State and Santa Clara were tied for fourth (189 each). Laura Engle of Indiana State was the winner in 17:41. Entering the meet, Edinboro was ranked No. 5 in NCAAA Division II.
SLIPPERY ROCK
Sarah Mangiarelli (Howland), a sophomore forward on the Slippery Rock women's soccer team, scored a goal in The Rock's 3-2 win over Bloomsburg on Oct. 2. Mangiarelli scored her team's second goal at the 36:36 mark on an assist from Meghan McGrath to give The Rock a 2-1 lead. McGrath scored two goals, including the game-winner, as Slippery Rock won its fourth straight match and improved to 6-2-2. Through 10 games, Mangiarelli is tied for third in scoring on the team with six points on three goals. She has taken 13 shots. McGrath leads the team in scoring with 11 points on four goals and three assists.
