Niners tradeLB Winborn
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Jaguars acquired linebacker Jamie Winborn from the San Francisco 49ers on Friday in exchange for an undisclosed draft pick.
Winborn started two of the 49ers' three games this season and had 13 tackles and a pass deflection. Last week, Winborn cleaned out his locker and left the team after coach Mike Nolan abruptly announced plans to trade him. Winborn had lost his job to converted defensive end Andre Carter.
In four-plus years with San Francisco, Winborn had 156 tackles, nine sacks and three interceptions.
The Jaguars released defensive tackle Martin Chase to make room for Winborn.
"It was an opportunity to acquire a linebacker who's a good player and fits our system," Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said. "It wasn't anything that was too costly or too difficult to pull off."
Del Rio wouldn't commit to Winborn becoming a starter when he begins workouts with the Jaguars next week, but said he would get a spot with the club's special teams.
"We see him as a guy who's played well, has started, so he has experience, has speed and can help us on [special] teams," Del Rio said. "We'll let him grow into a role."
Montgomerie,Daly tied
SAN FRANCISCO -- Colin Montgomerie and John Daly would seem to have little in common except for their names atop the leaderboard at the American Express Championship.
Montgomerie plots his way around the golf course, and while Friday was a battle with jet lag, he scrambled well enough for a 1-under 69 at Harding Park that left him one shot clear of Daly and David Howell of England, with Tiger Woods and five others another shot behind.
Daly swings for the fences, and he drove the green on a par 4 for the second straight day, this one on the 336-yard 16th as Woods was lining up a birdie putt ahead of him.
Montgomerie and Daly will be in the final group today of this World Golf Championship, along with Howell.
Harding Park, the municipal course with a $16 million makeover, has proven to be a worthy test through two rounds. It allows for good scores, dishes out bogeys with the slightest mistake and has so far kept anyone from running away from the field.
The result was 13 players within three shots of the lead, and 29 players only five shots behind.
Coe-Jones has2-stroke lead
AUBURN, Calif. -- Dawn Coe-Jones, who hasn't won on the LPGA Tour since 1995, shot a 5-under 66 to take a two-stroke lead over seven players after two rounds of the Longs Drugs Challenge.
Cristie Kerr, who led by four strokes after an opening 62, had a second-round 75 that included a quadruple-bogey 9 on the 485-yard 15th, and was four strokes behind the leader.
Coe-Jones, whose best finish this season was a tie for 26th, changed putters earlier in the week. She had six birdies Friday and was at 133 after 36 holes.
Riko Higashio, who carded a career-best 64 on Friday, was at 135 with Sherri Steinhauer (65), Heather Daly-Donofrio (66), Nicole Perrot (66) Joanne Morley (67), Lindsey Wright (68) and Beth Daniel (69).
Hee-Won Han, who had the day's low round of 63, Michele Redman (67) and defending champion Christina Kim (68) were at 136.

Baseball lostby 3 votes
LONDON -- Three months after being cut from the 2012 Olympics, baseball found out Friday how close the vote was -- very close.
Baseball lost its place in the Olympics by three votes, international federation president Aldo Notari told The Associated Press.
The result -- 54-50 against, with 53 votes in favor needed to remain -- was tight enough for the sport to push for a vote of reinstatement in February.
