SOCCER Ursuline wins Steel Valley title
Poland beat Salem to stay unbeaten in the Metro Athletic Conference.
WARREN -- Justin Mihaly scored a goal and had two assists as the Ursuline High boys soccer team posted a 3-0 victory over Warren Harding Thursday for its first Steel Valley Conference championship since 1998.
Nick Clowes and Kevin Patrick scored a goal apiece for the Irish (9-3-1, 4-0 SVC). Lucas Gonzalez had an assist.
Ursuline had 29 shots on goal and Warren Harding had five.
Goalkeeper Jared Daly had three saves for the Irish and Steve King had 17 saves for the Raiders.
Poland 2, Salem 0
SALEM -- Junior Clay Bolton and senior Dain Malaniak had the goals for the Bulldogs (11-1-1).
Sophomore Blake Rhein had one assist and senior goalie Caleb Markusic had one save. Markusic has a goals-against-average percentage of less than 0.50.
Markusic and junior goalie Thomas Lange have had only five goals scored against them this season.
Poland's lone loss was 1-0 to West Branch and its tie was with Fitch.

Howland 2, Niles 1
HOWLAND -- Eric Albani scored the deciding goal for the Tigers (10-4, 5-1 MAC) with 18 minutes remaining in the second half.
Ian Jones scored a goal on an assist from Sedan Gerin to give Howland a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Tom Fairburn scored a goal for Niles (4-8-2) early in the second half.
Joe Harvey had seven saves for Niles. Dan Miller had six saves for Howland.
Canfield 5, Fitch 4
AUSTINTOWN -- Kevin Ricks scored the winning goal for the Cardinals. Dave Murdoch had two goals, while Canfield's Ryan Konik scored on an assist from Dave Murcoch. Nick Benedetto scored on an assist from Kyle Reese and Ricks scored unassisted.
Joe Sebaugh, Nick Bowlen, Brad Hrinko and Matt Carach scored a goal apiece for the Falcons. Andrew Monk had 15 saves for the Falcons and Eric Clayton had four for the Cardinals.
Girls
LIBERTY -- Tori Spencer and Kristina Peterson scored two goals apiece as Maplewood defeated Liberty 6-0.
Michelle Sloan and Erica Pinko each added a goal for the Rockets (8-2-3).
Emily Paris, Sierra Roberts, Pinko and Spencer each had an assist.
Maplewood had 35 shots on goal and Liberty had seven. Bonnee Clute had two saves for the Rockets.
Youngstown Christian 4, LaBrae 2
LABRAE -- Kara Cooper had three goals and an assist for Youngstown Christian (4-8-1). Alyssa Rojas also scored and Kathy Wengerd had 20 saves.
For LaBrae, Abbey Underwood and Alexandria Polomsky scored goals and Jalisa Elkins had an assist.
