MAN SHOT IN RIGHT FOOT
Man shot in right foot
YOUNGSTOWN -- Antwain Blackmon, 19, of Rush Boulevard told police he was at the corner of Rush and Ravenwood Avenue about 9:45 p.m. Wednesday when he heard five to six shots and then realized he'd been hit in his right foot. He ran to a house on Hilton Avenue to call police. A witness told police he heard three shots and then saw two men wearing long white T-shirts go south on Rush. Blackmon was treated Thursday at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Treasurer sentenced
YOUNGSTOWN -- The $6,625 Judge Maureen A. Sweeney of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court ordered former Austintown middle school treasurer Rosemary Hudak to repay will come directly from her state employees' retirement fund. Sweeney sentenced Hudak to eight months in prison Wednesday and ordered her to pay a $2,000 fine and court costs, and repay the school. Prosecutors said Hudak took money from the middle school treasury and the school's athletic, yearbook and cheerleading funds. She was arraigned in April 2004 and pleaded guilty July 25 this year to one count of theft in office.
Accidental drowning
WARREN -- The death of a man found July 1 in the Mahoning River near Perkins Park has been ruled an accidental drowning. Trumbull County Coroner's Office issued a ruling Thursday on the death of James Harrington, 53, no address available. His decomposing body was taken to the Cuyahoga County Coroner's Office in Cleveland. The Trumbull coroner's office is looking into the feasibility of constructing a facility that is ventilated specifically for the examination of such decomposition cases.
House fire confined
YOUNGSTOWN -- A fire at 2306 Elberen St. at 8:21 p.m. Wednesday was confined to the first floor of the vacant house, said fire Lt. Kevin Johnson. Damage to the 1 1/2 story house was estimated at $9,000. County records show the market value of the land and house is $40,200. Johnson said the fire was likely deliberately set.
Learning fire safety
SALEM -- The Salem Fire Department will have a Fire Prevention Day from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday. Activities for children include fire station tours, fire equipment and truck demonstrations, safety talks and spraying water from a fire hose. Activities for adults include fire safety education including smoke and carbon monoxide detector placement and fire extinguisher training. There also will be a simulation of smoke inside a burning building.
Leaf pickup begins
CANFIELD -- Leaf pickup in the city will begin Monday and continue through Nov. 18. Leaves should be placed along the edge of the street, not in the street, and no farther than 6 feet back, said city manager Chuck Tieche. The city will accept only leaves and cut grass -- no stones or branches.
City cites contractor
SHARON, Pa. -- Paliotta Contracting of Pittsburgh has until Wednesday to respond to the city citation that its equipment at the site of the unfinished Oakland Avenue Viaduct is a health code violation. Mayor David Ryan contends rodents have taken up residence underneath the equipment and materials that have been idle since work on the viaduct stopped in 2001. City code officials filed the violation at District Justice James McMahon's office Monday. Ryan said the company ignored an earlier request he made to have the equipment removed.
17-year-old indicted
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 17-year-old Glenwood Avenue boy could face a prison term of 15 years to life in the shooting death of Eric Farmer, 15, of St. Louis Ave. A Mahoning County grand jury indicted Craig Franklin on Thursday on one count of murder and one count of aggravated robbery, with firearms specifications on both counts. Farmer died May 22, the city's 13th homicide of 2005. Police said Farmer was shot in the chest about 5 p.m. May 21 during an attempted robbery at Atway's Market on Lexington Avenue on Youngstown's North Side.
Talk on library's future
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Northeast Homeowners and Concerned Citizens Association will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Price Memorial AME Zion Church, 920 Dryden Ave. Citizens of the 1st and 2nd wards are urged to attend. Carlton Sears, director of the public library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, will speak on the future of the library.
