NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Authorities are still trying to determine what caused a fire that left a 4-month-old infant dead.
Firefighters and police pulled Evan Prioletti's body from 842 Morton St. after putting out the flames that were first discovered by the infant's 4-year-old brother, Jack.
Evan died of acute smoke and fume inhalation, said Lawrence County Deputy Coroner Sam Teolis.
What happened
Police Chief Tom Sansone said the children were home with their mother, Amy, when the blaze started just before 1 p.m. Monday.
Amy Prioletti and the baby were in an upstairs bedroom when the 4-year-old came upstairs and told his mother the house was on fire, the chief said.
Sansone said Prioletti grabbed both children and jumped out of the second-story bedroom window. But as she was jumping from the window the baby fell out of her arms and back into the bedroom. She was unable to pull herself back in to get the infant, he said.
Sansone said the mother was complaining of back pain after the fall, and the 4-year-old appeared to be uninjured. Jack was treated at Jameson Hospital and released.
Amy Prioletti was taken to UPMC Hospital in Pittsburgh, where she was in fair condition Tuesday afternoon.
Two other children were in school at Thaddeus Stevens School, which is next to the home, he said. Prioletti's husband, also named Jack, was not home when the fire started.
