Canfield duo posts 3 wins in sectional
CANTON -- Canfield High's top-seeded doubles team of Rachel McGowan and Renee Lesnett got off to a strong start Wednesday in their quest for a return trip to the Division I state tennis tournament.
The defending state doubles champions won three matches in the girls sectional tournament to earn a berth in Saturday's semifinals. The championship match will follow.
McGowan and Lesnett defeated Rose Shaffer and Brittani Jones of Fitch 6-0, 6-0, Sarah Kokomoor and Stephanie Klein of Copley 6-1, 6-0 and Kristy Newlow and Emily Hornyak of Perry 6-1, 6-0.
In the semifinals, the Canfield duo will take on Massillon Jackson's Stacy Colan and Caitlin Klausner, who eliminated Katie Yazvac and Ann Jesko of Boardman 6-1, 6-1.
Nard, Sulick also advance
Canfield's Jillian Nard and Lauren Sulick also reached the semifinals and will meet Jackson's Megan Stoll and Loni Dickerhoof Saturday.
Nard and Sulick defeated Jill Roholt and Angela Apostolo of Canton GlenOak 6-2, 6-2, Amelia Lamp and Ebony Hodges of Copley 6-3, 6-3 and Marie Ciccolini and Harvvah Rhodes of Green 7-5, 7-6 (3).
Canfield singles player Christina Brandt advanced to Saturday's quarterfinals with victories over Ontayya Zachary of Canton McKinley, 6-0, 6-0; Samantha Schneider of Fitch, 6-1, 6-2; and Suzanne Leffler of Massillon, 6-2, 6-1.
