Child support arrests
The child support roundup held this week in 39 Ohio counties resulted in 287 reported arrests. Arrests made in 13 of the counties, including Mahoning, had not been reported as of Wednesday to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services in Columbus, a spokesman said. The number of arrests this year is the third highest reported since the annual event began in 1997. Since 1997, 2,275 arrests have been made statewide. The maximum penalty in a nonsupport case is 18 months in prison and $5,000 fine. There are more than 1 million child support cases in Ohio, which has the third-largest caseload in the nation. ENON VALLEY, Pa. -- A tractor-trailer plowed into a car and just missed hitting a toll booth on the Pennsylvania Turnpike near the Ohio border, police said. The accident happened about 11 a.m. Wednesday in the westbound lanes of the turnpike near exit 1, authorities said. The tractor-trailer jumped its lane and slammed into a car in the next lane, police said. The two women in the car escaped with minor injuries. Identities of the victims were not released, but authorities said the women were from Ohio and one was in her 70s. The accident closed two lanes of the Gateway Toll Plaza, the final westbound exit before Ohio. Workers also had to clean up diesel fuel that spilled from the tractor-trailer. The accident did not shut down the turnpike or toll plaza, state police said.
