COLUMBUS -- Youngstown native Dan Green is once again using his musical talent to raise money for victims of a tragedy.
His new album, "Gulf Coast Relief Effort," includes the song "Where You Gonna Go," about the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Proceeds from the song will go entirely to the American Red Cross, Salvation Army and Habitat for Humanity for use in the stricken area.
"I'm trying to have a bigger purpose," said the longtime producer and singer-songwriter. "I figure I can raise more money than I can donate."
The album contains four songs, including "September Morn," which addresses the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The song was one of 12 chosen to be included in the Broadway review, "9/11: The Musical Response."
Green is currently negotiating to produce a video of the song.
He is also trying to get radio airplay. The pop/folk album is available for $5, plus shipping and handling, from Green's Web site, www.amerisound.com.
Career history
Green, a South High graduate, has carved a niche for himself as a commercial jingle writer in Columbus, where his Amerisound studio is located.
In the past 25 years, he has sold more than 100 jingles for companies such as the White Castle and Wendy's restaurant chains, as well as for regional car dealerships. He also scored a Nicktoon cartoon special entitled "A Star for Jeremy."
"I had a tape player when I was a kid in Youngstown, and I used to make up funny commercials," he said. "Some kids liked sports; I liked making commercials."
The Ohio State University graduate had a band for years before starting a studio in Columbus, where he grew a reputation for his commercial jingles.
Green now finds himself in a transitional phase of his career. He is doing inspirational presentations for groups, such as divorce recovery.
"I give a talk and sing," he said. "It's about life issues, not religious issues."
