Program needs mentors
YOUNGSTOWN -- Volunteers are needed to serve as mentors to middle school pupils in the Youngstown City Schools. The program is called Mentoring from the Heart.
Mentoring takes place through after-school programs, job shadowing, tours of colleges and technical schools, career days, community service projects and many other life-enriching activities.
Mentors are needed to give one hour per week of friendship and companionship, to serve as role models and encourage middle school pupils to improve academic performance, feelings of self-worth, and encourage involvement in school and social activities.
For a mentor application, stop at the office of Recovery Restoration Inc., 552 W. Delason Ave., 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday, or call (330) 480-0860.
Training for substitutes
LISBON -- The Columbiana County Educational Service Center will have a one-day substitute teacher training program Oct. 20. The class will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the center, 38720 Saltwell Road. Cost of the training is $15 plus a $20 fee for a required background check, which must be completed before the training.
Training participants must have a bachelor's degree and bring their official college transcripts, driver's license or picture ID and a check or money order for $12 written out to the "Ohio T.E.C." for a one-year, temporary substitute-teaching certificate. A continental breakfast will be provided. Lunch is on your own. To register, call Sue Mansfield at (330) 424-9591. Registration deadline is Oct. 17.
'Discovery Day' at Malone
CANTON -- The Malone College Office of Admissions will have a "Discovery Day" for high school juniors and seniors Oct. 17.
The visitors will get a firsthand look at what it's like to be a student at Malone, a Christian college for the arts, sciences and professions. The day includes an admissions presentation, a campus tour and lunch with a professor from the prospective student's chosen major.
