CORTLAND -- Hubbard High coach Jeff Bayuk wasn't sure how his young team would react after last week's loss to Liberty.
He didn't find out until midway through the second quarter of the game against Lakeview Friday night after the Eagles fell behind the Bulldogs 13-0.
Bayuk turned lose sophomore quarterback Marc Kanetsky, who responded by completing 19-of-24 passes for 283 yards and three touchdowns to lead Hubbard past Lakeview, 31-20.
"I've been taking a lot of Dramamine before these games," Bayuk said about the ups and downs of the first half of the season. "Maybe I can put it away after the way these guys played tonight.
"We're really excited about Marc and he really came through," Bayuk said. "Whenever you lose a game like last week, two people get the blame and one of them is usually the quarterback.
"He came in here and showed a lot of mental toughness as a sophomore. I'm very proud of him."
Bulldogs jump out early
After giving up two early scores to the Bulldogs on a blocked punt by Kyle Smedi that was recovered by Rylan Hardman and returned for a score and on a 25-yard touchdown pass from Kevin Albert to Jon Biehl, Kanetsky and company finally came to life.
Kanetsky completed all four of his passes in a nine-play, 74-yard drive that ended 54 seconds before halftime on a Steve Cinicola 3-yard run. Cinicola's conversion kick made the score 13-7.
"That was an important score for us to get back in the game," Bayuk said. "I applaud our kids for the way they came out in the second half."
Second half scores
Hubbard scored on four of their five possessions in the second half.
Kanetsky threw an 8-yard touchdown to Mike Maietta early in the third quarter and then on the next drive he found Joel Younkins on a 13-yard scoring play.
Kanetsky completed passes to seven different Hubbard receivers.
In the fourth quarter, the young quarterback led the Eagles (4-2, 2-1) on a nine-play drive that ended in a 32-yard field goal by Cinicola.
Hubbard's final score came on a 25-yard touchdown pass from Kanetsky to Russell Hawkins.
"They're a very good football team," Lakeview coach Tom Pavlansky said of the Eagles. "Defensively, we couldn't stop them. We couldn't get them off the field.
"We're a good football team too and showed that in the first half, but we missed some plays," Pavlansky said.
"There were some opportunities out there that we missed."
Final Lakeview score
Lakeview (4-2, 2-1) got its final score after completing a 49-yard pass from Kevin Albert to Jon Biehl that gave the Bulldogs good field position. Matt Kohuth scored on a 2-yard run minutes later to close out the scoring.
Albert was 8-for-14 for 165 yards and a touchdown.
Hubbard's Younkins rushed for 66 yards on 15 carries and Cinicola added 58 on 11 hauls.
Hubbard's defense, which was outstanding in the second half, recorded three quarterback sacks. Two of those were made by Mark Dell.
