BOARDMAN Habitat will give Golden Hammers
Mahoning County Habitat for Humanity has built 13 homes.
BOARDMAN -- Millard Fuller, founder of Habitat for Humanity International, will be the keynote speaker at Habitat for Humanity of Mahoning County's first Golden Hammer Awards benefit dinner Sunday at Mr. Anthony's on South Avenue.
The social hour will be at 4 p.m., followed by dinner at 5 p.m., the speaker at 6 p.m. and the awards at 6:30 p.m.
The awards will honor organizations that have contributed materials, volunteer labor, expertise or other significant support to the local Habitat effort and to raise funds with which to build affordable homes for local low-income people.
Recipients
The Mahoning County Habitat for Humanity, established in 1989, has built 13 new homes and rehabilitated another in Youngstown and Struthers and plans to dedicate three more new homes in the next five months, said Habitat spokesman William Farragher.
This year's Golden Hammer Awards and recipients include:
UCorporate Impact: For major lasting effect on the impact of Habitat in Mahoning County, FirstEnergy Corp.
UCommunity Leadership: For coalition making and fund raising, Youngstown-Columbiana Board of Realtors and Rotary Clubs of Mahoning County.
UHabitat Good Neighbor: For professional volunteerism, Trade Union Apprentice Program of Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 396; Sheet Metal Workers Local 33; and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 64.
UNo Place Like Home: For professional wholesalers giving back to the community, McCrudden Heating Supply Co.
UBuilding on Faith: For enduring, nurturing church involvement, St. John's Episcopal Church.
UYouth Leadership: For youth organization and achievement in home building, Austintown Fitch High School.
UMaking a Difference Together: For diverse institutions together achieving multiple positive results, the wood shop at Federal Correctional Institution at Elkton.
