YSU scholarship fund to honor 2001 graduate who died at 28
The family will be on television Sunday.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State University and the YSU Foundation today will announce the establishment of the Jackie Novak Memorial Scholarship fund.
Applicants must be from Mahoning, Trumbull or Columbiana counties and must maintain a minimum 2.4 grade point average.
The university and the foundation hope to raise $10,000 to endow the scholarship. Donations can be made through YSU development officer Joe Cassese at (330) 941-2756.
Novak, who received a degree in education from YSU in 2001 and taught in the Jackson-Milton school district, died unexpectedly on Mother's Day this year at age 28.
Her husband, Jeff, and three daughters -- ages 6, 2 and 6 months -- will be featured on ABC-TV's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" at 8 p.m. Sunday.
The program's crew demolished the family's Arlene Avenue home and built them a new one in six days while filming the episode.
In October, YSU President C. David Sweet announced the creation of scholarship funds to provide full YSU tuition for each of the Novaks' three daughters.
