Struthers wins opener against Girard, 34-23



Sophomore Ashley Galbraith sparked the Wildcats' second half rally.
STRUTHERS -- Sophomore guard-forward Ashley Galbraith had 13 of her 15 points in the second half, including all nine of Struthers' fourth-quarter points as the Wildcats won their season opener, 34-23, over Girard.
Galbraith, who came off the bench last year for John Grandy's squad, finished with 15 points. She was 5-of-13 at the foul line.
Classmate Halle Minchin-Skook added eight points for the Wildcats, who trailed, 9-0. Tied 12-12 at halftime, Liz Valerio scored all five of her points during a 13-point third quarter.
Of the starters, Valerio and Amanda Rouzzo are juniors and Terra Stocker is the only senior. The No. 6 six player is freshman Dominique Martino.
Brittany Palmer's seven points led Girard (0-2).
Howland 69, Champion 25
HOWLAND -- Ellie Shields scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds while Alexa Williams added 17 points and Allie Airhart eight assists, to lead Howland in the season opener for both teams.
Elizabeth Ghindia had 14 points and Brittney Skeels five rebounds to lead Champion.
Liberty 48, Niles 46
LIBERTY -- Nina Gabrelcik scored 17 of her game-high 23 points in the final quarter for Niles, including four of her five 3-point goals, but her scoring spree wasn't enough as Liberty held on to win in its season debut.
Katie Greas had 12 points and Brianna Pettway 10 to spark Liberty.
Brookfield 43, Badger 33
KINSMAN -- Morgan Bonekovic had 17 points and Kelly Jones added 14 in Brookfield's opener.
Bonekovic also had nine blocked shots for the Warriors, who led, 13-0 after eight minutes. Badger had a 7-4 scoring edge in the second period before each team had 26 points in the last two quarters.
Brookfield had an 11-4 advantage at the foul line.
Rachel Doran tallied 11 points for Badger (0-2).
Lisbon 65, Mineral Ridge 43
LISBON -- Erica Sims scored 23 points while Kaitlin Glenn added 15 and Emily Smith 14 to lead Lisbon.
Rachael Siler had 13 points and six rebounds and Abbey Kiger 12 points to spark Mineral Ridge.
Jackson-Milton 49, Lordstown 31
NORTH JACKSON -- Carrie Fiol had 16 points, including three 3-point goals and five assists to lead Jackson-Milton past Lordstown.
Megan Whitmer added 14 points, five rebounds and six assists for the Bluejays who never trailed after taking a 15-7 first quarter lead. Brianna Bladgett and Heather Wickline each had seven points for Lordstown.
Columbiana 58, Springfield 42
COLUMBIANA -- Behind the entire first quarter, Columbiana took control in the second quarter and proceeded to its first win in two games.
Colleen Eisenbraun had a game-high 20 points, while sophomore Katie Douglas had 17 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks for the Clippers. Krista Johnson added 10 points and six assists.
In a very physical game, Columbiana was assessed 26 fouls and Springfield 12. The Tigers made only 13 of 37 free throw attempts and only 14 of 44 field goals.
Columbiana was much better goal-wise, making 25 of 50, but only sank eight of 14 at the line.
Samantha Cavalier was Springfield's top scorer with 15 points. Teammate Christy Warren had eight rebounds.
