Mooney
YOUNGSTOWN -- Tickets for Saturday's Division IV state final between Cardinal Mooney and Coldwater will be on sale at Mooney's main office from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. today through Friday. Presale tickets are $7. Tickets at the gate are $9. All tickets are reserved seating.
The game will be played at 11 a.m. at Canton Fawcett Stadium.

ST. LOUIS -- Sophomore quarterback Tom Zetts was named first-team Academic All-Gateway.
Five players were named academic all-conference.
Junior center Ryan Jewell and senior defensive end Justin Scholes were named second-team, while senior long snapper/short snapper Tanner Dunlap and senior wide receiver Jameson Evans were honorable mention.
The team's awards banquet will be held Dec. 10 at the Chestnut Room in the Kilcawley Center at noon.

*TOLEDO -- Youngstown's Pat Nelson is making sure his 23-year-old heavyweight, Devin Vargas, is staying busy.
Nelson will have the 2004 Olympic captain in his seventh pro fight Dec. 5 on the Woodlawn, Md., Martin West card.
Vargas (6-0, 3 knockouts) will fight Albert Newberry (3-1, 2 KOs) of Ottumwa, Iowa, in a six-round heavyweight match.
Devin is the younger brother of middleweight Dallas Vargas, who also is managed by Nelson.
*SADDLEVILLE, Pa. -- Kiez Smith of Boardman, will be on the 12-bout card here Thursday.
Smith (4-1), trained by John Hobart at the Buckeye Elks, will be in a 147-pound three-rounder against Fred Ryan (3-1) from the Third Avenue Boxing Club in Pittsburgh.

*NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Westminster College swimming teams are nationally-ranked in Division III this week.
Junior Ryan Trunk qualified to become just the second swimmer in school history to compete at the U.S. Open.
The women's team (3-1) is ranked 17th and the men's team (3-0-1) is 22nd.
The U.S. Open is Thursday through Saturday in Auburn, Ala. Trunk qualified for the 100-meter freestyle by posting a school-record time of 45.49 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle at the Presidents' Athletic Conference championships last season.
*NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Westminster senior Chris Castillo (Fitch) had two field goals and three extra-point kicks in the East Coast Bowl in Petersburg, Va., Saturday.
The all-star game featured top senior players from NCAA Division I-AA, II and III. Castillo helped the South team to a 27-14 win over the North.
Youth hockey
MENTOR -- The Youngstown Jr. Phantom Pee Wee hockey team swept four games to win the Mentor Thanksgiving Tournament.
The Jr. Phantoms outscored their opponents 34-7 in the tournament and won the championship game Sunday against Geauga, 10-3.
Jared Taylor and Ryan Demyen led the goal scoring with eight apiece, while Corey Barnhouse had 11 assists.
Brennan Allen was in goal for all four victories. Also scoring were Lucas Clarke (six goals), Mike Gorgacz (five), Nick Malvasi (three), Barnouse (two) and Riley Emery and Brandon Nightingale (one each).

Indians opener
CHICAGO -- The Chicago White Sox will play the major league season opener April 2 against the Cleveland Indians.
The game, which starts at 8 p.m., will be televised by ESPN2.
Pirates trade
NEW YORK -- Outfielder Tike Redman's contract was purchased by the New York Mets Monday from the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The 28-year-old Redman hit .251 in 319 at-bats last season with 20 doubles, two homers and 26 RBIs. He made his major league debut with Pittsburgh in 2000 and has a .277 career average, 15 homers and 101 RBIs in 392 games.

*MOBILE, Ala. -- Toledo will play in the GMAC Bowl on Dec. 21 against a team from Conference USA.
The Rockets, co-champions of the West Division of the Mid-American Conference, finished the season 8-3 and 6-2 in the league.
*DETROIT -- Either Akron or Northern Illinois will represent the Mid-American Conference in the Motor City Bowl.
Akron (6-5), which won the conference's East Division, and Northern Illinois (7-4), which won the West, play Thursday night for the MAC championship.
*ATHENS -- Ohio coach Frank Solich, hired this year to turnaround a football program that has had little success, was convicted of drunken driving on Monday two days after police spotted him slumped over the wheel of his vehicle.
