U.S. women's team snaps losing streak
COLUMBUS (AP) -- Chanda Gunn made 26 saves before stopping every Canadian attempt in a shootout, and the United States women's hockey team snapped a six-game losing streak against Canada with a 2-1 victory Sunday night.
Natalie Darwitz and Sarah Parsons scored in the shootout for the United States, which nearly posted a surprising shutout victory behind Gunn's inspired play in her first full game against Canada during the exhibition tour leading to the Turin Olympics.
Late in the second period, Katie King scored the Americans' first goal against Canada in nearly four full games. Though Canada's Jayna Hefford forced the shootout with a late goal, the victory was a much-needed morale boost for the Americans, who hadn't beaten Canada -- the favorite for a second straight Olympic gold medal -- since April.
The United States also beat Canada 1-0 in a shootout to finish the Women's World Championships. After four ensuing Canadian victories in rinks from Finland to Saskatoon, Canada also won a pre-Olympic tournament in Turin two weeks ago, beating the United States twice -- including a 7-0 rout in the title game on Nov. 12.
