Work training offered seniors in Youngstown area



YOUNGSTOWN -- Senior Employment Centers throughout Ohio and Pennsylvania have 200 openings for older workers to participate in a training program funded by the U. S. Department of Labor and the Ohio Department of Aging.
The Senior Community Service Employment Program provides paid part-time-work experience and paid training to assist workers age 55 and older to re-enter the job market. Individuals must meet federal eligibility guidelines.
Corrie Adams, project coordinator for the Senior Employment Center in Youngstown, said new program expansion and turnover have created 38 openings.
Participants receive minimum wage ($5.15 an hour) at nonprofit or governmental agencies and are trained for a variety of positions in accounting, administrative assistant, cook assistant, data entry, driver, file clerk, food service worker, home health aide, janitorial, and maintenance services, receptionist and other fields.
To qualify, a person must be at least 55, have a limited income, live in Mahoning or Trumbull counties, want to learn new skills and become self-sufficient.
There is no upper age limit. People have successfully worked in the program into their 80s and 90s.
