LATE START: Shoppers thronged to downtown Youngstown Dec. 2, 1950, for their first big chance to do some Christmas shopping, and they seemed happy to be there. The traditional pre-Christmas rush the weekend after Thanksgiving was snowed out -- 29 inches of snow fell between Friday, Nov. 24 and Monday, Nov. 27. The city was under a state of emergency, with Ohio National Guardsmen patrolling the streets to offer help and enforce a curfew. Downtown merchants described the Dec. 2 crowds as record-breaking. This group was captured on film by Photographer Ed Shuba crossing Phelps at W. Federal.
