Piquet saves Newton Falls



McDonald and Lakeview also opened the season with victories.
NEWTON FALLS -- Senior guard Casee Piquet made two free throws with less then a minute remaining, as Newton Falls edged Warren JFK, 36-35, in overtime Friday of a girls season-opening non-conference basketball game in the Tigers' gymnasium.
Kortni Collin made a layup shot to give the Tigers a 34-33 lead, but the Eagles countered with a basket to go ahead just before the clinching free throws by Piquet.
Warren JFK was ahead 6-3 after the first quarter, but Newton Falls held a 13-12 lead at intermission. After three periods the score was tied 24-24 and 30-30 at the end of regulation to send it into overtime.
Emily Montgomery paced the Tigers with 16 points, 10 of them made at the foul line. Michelle Chaves led the Eagles with 11 points, seven of them from the foul line.
McDonald 86, Girard 35
MCDONALD -- Ashley Tondo, Amy Dolsak and Emily Dolsak combined for 46 points as McDonald in the decisive victory
The Blue Devils rushed out a a 33-2 lead in the first quarter and cruised to the easy victory.
Tondo triggered the McDonald attack with 23 points and she yanked down nine rebounds and had seven assists.
Amy Dolsak added 13 points, nine rebounds and four steals. Emily Dolsak finished with 10 points and Alyssa had four steals.
Adrienne Stevenson and Ashley Palmer led the Indians with 11 points apiece.
Lakeview 64, Badger 45
CORTLAND -- Joanna Novotny scored 20 points as the Bulldogs rolled to an impressive win.
The Bulldogs were in command 37-21 at intermission and the Braves couldn't recover.
Lindsay Whetzel added 13 points and Chelsea Butler had 10 for Lakeview, which had a 46-32 rebounding advantage.
Lauren McCumber grabbed 11 rebounds, while Jen Baker had five steals and Novotny five steals.
Samantha Bonar took scoring honors for Badger with 27 points and she had 11 rebounds. Rachel Gaines had five assists and five steals.
Aquinas 55, Columbiana 45
COLUMBIANA -- Carly Pavlic had a game-high 22 points with the help of 14 free throws and Bridgette Heline added 15 points for St. Thomas Aquinas.
For Columbiana, sophomore center Katie Douglass and guard-forward Kristina Davidson had 10 points apiece. Davidson, a senior, also had 11 rebounds.
Columbiana pulled within five several times in the third and fourth quarters, but couldn't get over the hump.
