Canfield resident receives Counselor of the Year Award



The guidance counselor has taught at Campbell Memorial High School and YSU.
BERLIN CENTER -- Margaret Stephens of Canfield has been named recipient of the 2005 Dwight Arnold School Counselor of the Year Award.
It was presented earlier this month by the Ohio School Counselor Association in recognition of outstanding service to students, staff and families.
Stephens, also known as Peggy, is a guidance counselor in the Western Reserve Local School District.
In April, she received the YSU College of Education's Outstanding Alumni Award in counseling. In October 2003, she was named recipient of the YSU Outstanding Community Outreach Award. She has also been honored as a Martha Holden Jennings Scholar and recognized in Who's Who Among America's Teachers.
Stephens taught English at Campbell Memorial High School for 17 years and later became the guidance counselor and director of guidance during her final 18 years with the district. She also taught graduate courses and supervised guidance interns at YSU.
She retired from the Campbell schools in 2004 and has since worked for YSU and the Mahoning County Career & amp; Technical Center and at Western Reserve.
She is a member of the YWCA Committee for Young Women with Bright Futures and is vice president of membership for Phil Delta Kappa. She is also a member of the Ohio and East counseling associations and the YSU Department of Counseling Community Board.
She and her husband, Robert, have two children.
