Alpena gets 37 saves in win over Mahoning Valley

ALPENA, Mich. -- A hockey team's objective is to play well for 60 minutes. Much too often, it doesn't happen. For the Alpena Ice Diggers, this was their night.
Playing near flawless hockey for three periods and getting 37 saves from Johnny Morrow, the Ice Diggers defeated the Mahoning Valley Phantoms 3-1 in North American Hockey League (NAHL) action. It was Alpena's first win against the Phantoms in five games, as they raised their record to 6-15-3, while the Phantoms fell to 11-9-1.
The Phantoms tied it in the third period when Bret Larson made another outstanding individual effort to clear the puck out of the Phantoms zone and then led a four-on-two break. He brought the puck into Alpena's zone on the left wing and fed Chris Fairbanks across ice. Fairbanks shot against the grain, wristing a shot into the upper left corner of the net as Morrow moved laterally to cover the right post at 3:51.
Alpena answered with two goals to ensure the win.
The Phantoms look to split the weekend series today at 7 p.m.
