ACT program seeks teacher participants to develop materials

Participants get a $5,500 stipend, transportation costs and housing assistance.
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- American College Test is looking for outstanding secondary school teachers to participate in a summer program designed to help develop and evaluate ACT's test materials and classroom support materials.
The testing organization is willing to pay for their expert advice.
ACT's Visiting Teacher Program wants four teachers from middle school, junior high or high school with experience teaching minority students. The Visiting Teacher Program, which began in 1995, brings teachers from across the United States to ACT's national headquarters in Iowa City to examine the testing and classroom items.
During their six-week stay, teachers will use their classroom experience and expertise in one of two ways: to review, evaluate and develop ACT's test materials and make recommendations for improvement, and to review and develop instructional support materials that will be used to orient teachers to the many uses of ACT's tests.
Who is eligible
Secondary school science, mathematics and language arts teachers are eligible for the program. Earth/space science teachers and minority teachers are especially encouraged to apply.
The six-week program begins June 19 and runs through July 28, 2006. Teachers will receive a stipend of $5,500 and round-trip transportation between their home and Iowa City. ACT will secure and subsidize housing for the visiting teachers. Teachers will be asked to pay approximately $1,050 in rent for their entire stay.
Where to apply
To apply, teachers must submit a completed application, available online at ACT's Web site at www.act.org/path/secondary/visit.html.
Teachers will also need to send a resume and two letters of recommendation from people familiar with their professional background.
