COURT Inmate fined, put on probation after unsuccessful escape effort

She hung onto the undercarriage of a bus but was captured when she fell off.
COLUMBUS (AP) -- A judge put a Franklin County Jail inmate on probation for three years and fined her $500 for trying to escape by clinging to the underside of a bus.
Mari Ann Morrisey, 40, of Pickerington, admitted that on July 11 she slid under a bus that would have taken her and other inmates back to jail after a court appearance. She had appeared that day in Municipal Court on two misdemeanor traffic charges.
The attempt
Morrisey hung onto the bus' undercarriage for about a block before dropping to the street. She was captured immediately by a man who saw her fall.
Defense attorney William Meeks told Franklin County Common Pleas Judge Patrick Sheeran on Wednesday that Morrisey acted impulsively, but Judge Sheeran called the escape attempt "senseless."
Her traffic charges had been resolved, and she was only brought back to court to pay a fine before she would have been set free.
Tracy Mobley, 39, who attempted to escape with Morrisey, was tackled by an off-duty detective who happened to be outside the Hall of Justice when the bus drove by. Mobley has not yet been tried for the escape attempt.
Sheriff Jim Karnes later suspended three deputies and gave a written reprimand to another for negligence in allowing the two prisoners to escape.
