SteelHounds win first shootout, 7-6



BOSSIER CITY, La. -- In Tuesday's crazy game, the Youngstown SteelHounds scored two late third-period goals and won 7-6 in a shootout against the division-leading Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs.
The 13 goals were the most combined goals scored in a SteelHounds game. Chris Richards and Scott Barnes scored twice.
In the shootout, the SteelHounds (6-7-1) received goals from Jeff Christian, Richards and Barnes, while goalie Simon St. Pierre stopped all four shooters he faced to earn the victory.
The win snaps a four-game losing skid for the 'Hounds.
Barnes starts scoring
Youngstown started the scoring in the first period when Barnes connected on a power play goal at the 2:27 mark, assisted by Darryl Lloyd and Rob Ouimette.
The Mudbugs (7-5-2) answered with three straight goals, taking a 3-1 lead after one period. Ryan Manotowich, Brett Smith and Scott Sheppard scored for the Mudbugs, who out-shot the 'Hounds, 18-4, as St. Pierre made 15 saves.
In the second period, Richards clicked again with the man advantage, assisted by newcomer Jonathan Gagnon at the 8:57 mark.
Marc-Andre Roy tied the game for Youngstown at 3-3 with his first professional goal at the 10:56 mark. He was assisted by Barnes and Lloyd.
Sheppard scored his second goal at the 15:01 mark to put the Mudbugs ahead, 4-3. Bossier-Shreveport outshot the 'Hounds, 10-8, in the period.
Bossier-Shreveport took a 5-3 lead when Sheppard netted the hat trick early in the third period.
Richards pulled Youngstown to within a goal with his second midway through the third period, assisted by Christian.
Mudbugs defenseman Jason Basile scored from a tough angle to restore a two-goal lead for Bossier-Shreveport.
'Hounds rally to tie it
Youngstown answered with two goals in the final 1:09.
The first came from Christian on the power play, his 15th goal.
The second came off the Barnes with 56 seconds remaining and the extra attacker on the ice.
The shootout was the first for the SteelHounds.
Youngstown begins a six-game homestand Friday when they host the Corpus Christi Rayz. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at the Chevrolet Centre.
