GREENFORD -- Troopers of the Canfield post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol are investigating a one-car crash in Green Township that killed a Canfield Township woman.
Angel Whitehair, 20, of Columbiana-Canfield Road, was northbound on state Route 46 south of Western Reserve Road when the crash occurred around 7:45 a.m. Tuesday. The patrol said she lost control and the car went off the right side of the road and overturned.
She was not wearing a seat belt.
Man sentenced in rape
YOUNGSTOWN -- Daniel Robinson, 29, of East Florida Avenue has been sentenced to six years in prison for the rape of a now-10-year-old child he knew.
Mahoning County Common Pleas Court Judge Maureen A. Sweeney also ruled Monday that Robinson must report to the county sheriff as a sexual-oriented offender for 10 years.
Robinson has been in prison since 2003, when he was charged with the crime. He pleaded guilty to one count of rape earlier this year.
Defense lawyer Thomas E. Zena said Robinson is mentally retarded.
Emergency worker gear
NORTH LIMA -- Beaver Township trustees have authorized the township's Emergency Management Services department to buy new gear for emergency personnel.
At a special meeting Tuesday, trustees appropriated $11,000 to buy 31 new jackets and pants. Officials said the cost of the gear is estimated at $10,500. The gear is being bought to ensure additional safety for personnel, and is equipped with reflectors that can be seen at night, officials said.
Trustees' next regular monthly meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Dec. 13 at the administration offices.
Habitat project delayed
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- A delay in getting building plans has caused the Westminster College Chapter of Habitat for Humanity to delay its "house in a box" construction project to benefit victims of this year's Gulf Coast hurricanes.
The chapter, in conjunction with Lawrence County Habitat for Humanity, plans to frame an entire house in one day and had hoped to do it today. A new construction date hasn't been set.
Once the house is framed, it will be dismantled and shipped to Louisiana by truck, along with materials needed to complete the construction. National Habitat for Humanity will see that it is given to a family whose home was destroyed.
Police look at shooting
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- City police are investigating a shooting that left a 20-year-old man with a bullet wound in his ankle.
Police said the man told them he was walking on Robinson Street at about 6 p.m. Monday when a car approached him from behind and he heard a popping noise. The man contends that he then felt pain in his ankle and the car drove off, police said.
The victim said he soon saw his cousin drive by and flagged him down for a ride to the hospital.
Police said they could not find any spent shell casings or blood where the man said he was shot.
Woman finds bill is fake
AUSTINTOWN -- A woman who thought she was helping a man by giving him change for a $100 bill discovered the bill was fake when she tried to spend it.
Police were called around 7:50 p.m. Monday when the woman tried to spend the bill at Wal-Mart on Mahoning Avenue.
The woman told police she'd given a man change for the bill earlier at a Dairy Mart in Youngstown. He tried to spend it there but the store didn't have enough change, a police report said.
Cause of woodshop firestill under investigation
DAMASCUS -- Firefighters were searching Tuesday for the cause of a Monday evening fire that damaged a woodshop with an attached apartment, said John Bricker, chief of the Damascus Volunteer Fire Department.
Bricker said the fire was not suspicious. No one was injured.
Bricker said the structure was in the 2800 block of U.S. Route 62, but did not have the exact address or information about the occupant.
The fire started in the woodshop; the shop and apartment both had heavy smoke damage. The amount of damage had not been determined.
