Mighty Ducks claim Columbus veteran Marchant off waivers
COLUMBUS (AP) -- The Anaheim Mighty Ducks have claimed veteran Columbus Blue Jackets center Todd Marchant off waivers.
That means the Ducks assume Marchant's contract -- around $10 million through 2009, none that will count against the Blue Jackets' salary cap.
The National Hockey League team needed to clear space under the NHL salary cap after a deal last week that brought it center Sergei Fedorov and a fifth-round pick in the 2006 draft for center Tyler Wright and rookie defenseman Francois Beauchemin.
Marchant, signed as a free agent in 2003, is one of the few Blue Jackets who had been playing well at the offensive end while the team won only five of 21 games. The 32-year-old Marchant had three goals and six assists in 18 games.
The 5-foot-10, 180-pound Marchant has 148 goals and 238 assists in 774 NHL games over 13 seasons. He has seven goals, six assists and 42 penalty minutes in 43 postseason appearances. His best season was 2002-03 when he had 20 goals, 40 assists and 48 penalty minutes with Edmonton.
Recall goaltender
The Blue Jackets also have recalled goaltender Pascal Leclaire and defenseman Ole-Kristian Tollefsen from Syracuse of the AHL.
Goaltender Marc Denis has a strained groin and is day to day for the Blue Jackets. He is expected to miss Wednesday night's game against Nashville. Denis, who played in the 5-1 loss to Phoenix on Sunday, has allowed five or more goals four times in 15 games
Leclaire, Columbus' top pick in the 2001 draft, is 2-3-0 with a 2.99 goals-against average and a .910 save percentage in six games with Syracuse this season.
Tollefsen has two assists in 15 games this season.
