Teenagers charged
BOARDMAN -- Two 16-year-old Youngstown girls were charged with receiving stolen property, resisting arrest and obstructing official business after police followed them into the city with the girls driving a stolen car.
An officer saw a silver Buick Century on Friday evening parked along the south side of the Shell Gas Station on Market Street. When he ran the plate, the car came back as a stolen vehicle from Youngstown.
The officer called for backup as the car headed north on Market Street into Youngstown.
The two girls later got out of the car at Glenwood and Sherwood avenues after colliding with another vehicle and fled on foot to Big A's Drive Through on Glenwood. Police caught up to both girls near the drive-through.
One of the girls was released to her father and the other was taken to the Mahoning County Juvenile Justice Center until her parents returned to town, according to a police report.
Award for Judge Durkin
YOUNGSTOWN -- Ohio Justice Alliance of Community Corrections will present the C.J. McLin Award to Mahoning County Common Pleas Judge John Durkin at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday in the judge's courtroom. The award is given to an elected official whose use of alternative sentencing has had an impact on community corrections. Judge Durkin spearheaded the drug court movement in Mahoning County and has presided over felony drug court since it began in 1998.
Civil service exam
YOUNGSTOWN -- Wednesday at 4 p.m. is the deadline for turning in applications to take the Youngstown police officer examination, administered by the city's Civil Service Commission. The applications should be turned in to the commission on the 7th floor of city hall.
Shots fired at complex
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- An 18-year-old woman was grazed in the neck by a bullet as shots were fired outside her apartment. City police said the woman was treated by ambulance personnel after they arrived at Pin Oak Drive in Crestview Gardens apartment complex at 6:08 p.m. Sunday. Police said the woman was inside the apartment and the shots apparently came from the outside. Three bullet holes were found near a window. Police said they found a 15-round magazine loaded with 9 mm rounds in the parking lot in front of the building and spent 9 mm casings. No arrests have been made, police said.
Christian hip-hop artist
YOUNGSTOWN -- Christian hip-hop artist DPB (David Paul Brooks) will celebrate his new CD release, "Re-Identity," at Fifth Avenue Community Church, 1361 Fifth Ave., at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
DPB seeks to redefine hip-hop with lyrics that will challenge and bless today's youth. He comes from Birmingham, Ala. Featured on several songs of the CD is the legendary Bootsy Collins. Also accompanying David Paul Brooks will be Tidell, a dancer. Youngstown will be the second stop on a three-city tour ending in New York City. The $15-per-person cost at the door also includes a free CD.
Robbery reported
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police are searching for the man who pulled a gun and robbed First American Cash Advance at 2723 Mahoning Ave. of an undisclosed amount of cash Monday afternoon.
Employees described the robber as a black man in his mid-20s, about 5 feet 6 inches tall and 180 pounds. He wore a bandanna over his face and was wearing baggy pants, a brown coat and a white baseball cap.
An employee said the robber struck her a couple of times because he didn't think she was opening the safe quickly enough. She said the man took cash from the safe and two cash registers. As he left, he dropped his bandanna and some of the cash. Employees said the man fled on foot.
