NORTH LIMA -- If the Raiders claim another victory Friday, the South Range High School football team will secure an extra day off from school in December for the entire district.
The school board, at its monthly meeting Monday, agreed to cancel classes Dec. 2 should the football team make it to the Ohio High School Athletic Association's Division V championship game in Canton that day.
South Range plays in the Division V state semifinals Friday in Fremont. The school board moved to modify the 2005-06 calendar to delete Dec. 2 as a pupil attendance day should the team go to the championship game that day.
To make up for that day, the school district will extend the school year, making June 12 a pupil attendance day and June 13 as a teacher reporting day.
Rationale
Schools Superintendent Jim Hall told the board that modifying the school calendar would be the best action to take as opposed to having high absenteeism that day.
He added he did not think it would be in the district's best interest to classify Dec. 2 as a field trip day.
The board agreed to modify the calendar, but only if the team makes it to the championship game. If the team does not make it to that game, the district will revert to its original calendar.
