FIFTY YEARS AGO: An estimated 50,000 people jammed downtown Youngstown Nov. 23, 1955, the day before Thanksgiving, for a Christmas parade that followed a Wizard of Oz theme. Sixty students from Youngstown junior high schools portrayed characters from the story, including the Cowardly Lion and Tin Woodsman riding on this float as it passed McKelvey's department store. Thirteen district high school bands were interspersed between 16 floats. By tradition,Santa Claus rode on the last float.
