Youngstown gave up two goals within one minute against the Cotton Kings.
LUBBOCK, Texas -- The Youngstown SteelHounds dropped a heartbreaker on Friday night as the Lubbock Cotton Kings scored twice in the final minutes to win, 4-2.
Scott Barnes scored a pair of goals for the SteelHounds.
Youngstown (5-6-1) played a solid first period despite getting out-shot 15-11. The only goal of the period came on the power play when Barnes jammed in a rebound by Lance Leslie for his fourth goal of the season. Lorne Misita and Jeff Antonovich drew the assists at the 4:37 mark. David St. Germain made 15 saves in one of his best periods of the season.
The power play goal by the SteelHounds ended a two-game drought that saw them miss on 12 straight power plays.
Lubbock (6-6-1) tied the game early in the second period on a neutral zone turnover that was a transition to a three-on-two break. Emery Olauson centered a pass to Vic Pereira, who beat St. Germain for his second goal of the season. Nolan Brown and Olauson drew the assists at 5:25 of the period.
SteelHounds take lead
Youngstown came back just over 30 seconds later when Antonovich backhanded a pass to Barnes for his second goal of the night and fifth of the season for a 2-1 lead. Antonovich and Marc-Andre Roy were credited with the assists at 8:45 of the frame.
The 'Hounds had a great chance late in the frame to add to their lead with a four-on-three power play that turned into a five-on-three, but Lubbock held strongly and showed its form as one of the top penalty-killing teams in the CHL.
The Kings outshot the 'Hounds, 13-5, in the period.
It was a disastrous finish to the third period as the 'Hounds maintained their 2-1 lead and even had a power play with five minutes remaining in the game. But Lorne Misita and Sam Miller each was called for holding, giving the Kings a five-on-three power play.
