American Cancer Society offers scholarships

YOUNGSTOWN -- The American Cancer Society is offering college scholarships to young Ohio cancer survivors.
The program, launched seven years ago, provided 105 college-bound cancer survivors from across the state with $1,000 scholarships last year. Applications are being taken for the 2006-07 school year.
Program funding comes from the Relay For Life, the American Cancer Society's signature activity to honor cancer survivors and their families. The event raises millions of dollars nationally for cancer research, education, advocacy and services, including the scholarships.
Scholarship recipients may be invited to serve as American Cancer Society volunteers, train as mentors for future scholarship recipients and to represent the agency on campus and in their communities.
Scholarship applicants must be residents of Ohio, U.S. citizens, diagnosed with cancer before age 21, under the age of 25 at the time of application and planning to attend an accredited university or college in the United States.
Awards are based on scholastic performance, community service and leadership. Former recipients may apply.
Applications must be postmarked by Feb. 1. To get an application, call the American Cancer Society toll-free at (888) 227-6446 or visit the agency's Web site, www.cancer.org/ohiogrants.
