Cardinals from two schools lead the picks
Canfield's Mike Pavlansky shared coach of the year honors in Division II.
VINDICATOR STAFF REPORT
Cardinal Mooney seniors Desmond Marrow and Nate Burney have done it all on the field. And they're getting noticed off the field.
Marrow, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound defensive back, earned defensive player of the year honors in Division IV, while Burney, a 5-9, 180-pound running back, was named offensive player of the year for the Northeast Inland all-district teams, which were released Thursday.
Marrow, who verbally committed to Miami (Ohio) before the season started, had seven interceptions, three sacks and 22 pass break-ups for the defending state champions, who will meet Canton Central Catholic in Saturday's regional final.
Behind Bell
Burney, the school's second all-time leading rusher behind Ted Bell, ran for 1,833 yards and 19 TDs this season. They were two of six first-team selections, joining senior quarterback Derrell Johnson, senior defensive end Robert Walker, junior lineman Ishmaaily Kitchen and sophomore linebacker Michael Zordich.
In Div. II, Canfield coach Mike Pavlansky shared coach of the year honors with Louisville's Paul Farrah after leading the Cardinals to their second 10-0 record in the past four seasons.
Canfield also had six players on the first team: senior running back Angelo Babbaro, senior linebackers Kyle Banna and Joe Rosko, senior center Nick Rousher, senior defensive tackle Ryan Pitzer and junior defensive back Sean Baker.
In Div. III, Southeast senior quarterback Joe Knopick was named offensive player of the year after leading the Pirates to their second playoff appearance in school history. Knopick passed for more than 1,800 yards and rushed for more than 1,100 this season.
In Div. V, Warren JFK senior Anthony Elzy won his second straight offensive player of the year award after guiding the Eagles to their 15th playoff appearance in school history. Elzy, a University of North Carolina recruit, has run for more than 2,000 yards in each of the past two seasons.
In Div. VI, Mineral Ridge running back John Hack and Columbiana quarterback Mike Welce shared offensive player of the year honors, while Clippers coach Bob Spaite was named coach of the year.
Welce has passed for more than 1,100 yards and rushed for more than 800 this season, guiding the Clippers to an 11-1 record and a berth in this Saturday's regional final.
Hack had more than 1,250 yards and 18 TDs for the Rams (9-3), who lost to Columbiana in last week's regional semifinal.
