YOUNGSTOWN -- The final two former Mahoning County Sheriff's Department employees convicted in a civil-rights inmate abuse case began serving their federal prison terms this week. The Bureau of Prisons Web site shows former Sgt. Bill Deluca, 55, is serving his 16-month sentence at the Federal Correctional Institution in Butner, N.C., and former Cpl. Ronald Denson, 50, is serving his 18-month sentence at the Federal Correctional Institution in Morgantown, W.Va. Also incarcerated at the Butner prison is ex-Maj. Michael Budd and former Deputy Mark Dixon. In all, eight sheriff's employees were convicted. Only one, former Deputy Ronald Kaschak, was given probation.
Teen girl faces charges
WARREN -- A 16-year-old girl who attends Warren G. Harding High School was arrested Tuesday at the school and taken to the Juvenile Justice Center after being charged with assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. Patrolman Frank Tempesta, who was on school security duty, was flagged down at 9:05 a.m. by a teacher who complained that the girl wouldn't obey the teacher's commands. The girl became verbally abusive to Tempesta and punched him in his chest before being subdued and taken to JJC, a police report said.
Failed to show in court
YOUNGSTOWN -- Joseph D. Yohn, 37, of Columbiana failed to show Wednesday for arraignment in municipal court on a charge of public indecency, and a warrant was issued for his arrest, the clerk's office said. A patrolman said he saw Yohn at 7:11 p.m. Tuesday urinating on pavement as he stood next to a car in a parking lot behind a Chinese restaurant on Mahoning Avenue. Yohn was issued a citation that required him to be in court Wednesday morning.
Restaurant food stolen
YOUNGSTOWN -- Twenty-three cases of assorted frozen food -- steaks, chicken, veal, beef, pasta, cheese sticks and salmon -- were stolen from an outside freezer at Scarsella's Restaurant on Market Street, reports show. The chef discovered the theft Monday. A section of paneling was pried off a shed attached to the business, which allowed the thieves to reach in and unlock the gate, police said. The lock was then cut off the freezer.
Offering flu vaccine
LISBON -- Columbiana County Health Department will offer flu vaccine to high-risk individuals. Only those with appointments will be inoculated. To be eligible for the flu vaccine, a person must be 65 years of age or older and must have a chronic illness. Those who qualify may call the Columbiana County Health Department at (330) 424-0272 after 9 a.m. today to make an appointment for a clinic Friday.
Fire board will meet
BOARDMAN -- A special meeting of the Boardman Fire Appeals Board will be at 5 p.m. today at the Boardman Fire Prevention Bureau, 126 Boardman-Poland Road.
Arrested on drug charge
YOUNGSTOWN -- After a four-month drug investigation, police arrested Angelo Martinez, 42, of Rhoda Avenue on a charge of aggravated trafficking in cocaine, reports show. Martinez was arrested as he left a bar on Market Street on Tuesday afternoon. Police said they confiscated a large bag of powdered cocaine. Bond was set at $100,000 Wednesday in municipal court. Martinez will be back in court Wednesday for a preliminary hearing.
Rayen student charged
YOUNGSTOWN -- A student at The Rayen School was taken to the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center on Wednesday to face charges of felonious assault on a fellow student and assault on a teacher, police said. Police said the Catalina Avenue student, whose age was not immediately available, got into an argument over a book and then hit and swung a chair at a 16-year-old boy in the lunchroom. When the teacher intervened and stopped the chair, the Catalina boy charged at the teacher and had to be taken to the floor with the assistance of two other teachers and a patrolman, reports show.
