Mercer sheriff: Inmates to move into new jail in December

MERCER, Pa. -- Inmates will not be moved into the new Mercer County Jail until December, Sheriff William Romine Jr. said told the Mercer County Prison Board.
Romine said the last personnel training session will end Nov. 23 followed by "a couple of weeks of on-the-job training," before the move can take place. Officials had earlier projected the move for November. Dedication of the facility took place last week.
Mercer County Commissioner Brian Beader said Monday that there is still much exterior work to be done at the new jail, including seeding, which probably will have to wait until spring.
Also, the board approved the hiring of Steven Fertig Jr. of Sharpsville for the Intermediate Punishment Program at $23,330 annually.
