Fire on floor above store was arson, chief says
A resident was alerted by the sound of a smoke detector.
WARREN -- A Sunday evening fire that started in an upstairs hallway above Young's Leavittsburg Market, 55 S. Leavitt Road S.W., is definitely an arson case, said Warren Township Fire Chief Ken Schick.
This is the fourth arson in the structure this year.
It appears that an accelerant was used in setting the blaze, Schick said.
Investigators from the township police and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were on the scene, and evidence will be sent to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation and the State Fire Marshal's Office, Schick said.
There were no injuries, and there was no damage, Schick said. He did not know the motive.
The fire was discovered immediately by a resident who was alerted by the sound of a smoke detector, and a visiting Braceville firefighter extinguished the blaze quickly by pouring water on it, Schick said. About 10 people reside in apartments over the market.
Previous arsons
Three other arsons occurred in the structure this summer. A Molotov cocktail caused the first one. A small rug was set aflame in the second one; and three small fires were set behind the store counter in the third blaze.
In August, Sandy Adams, 45, committed suicide by shooting herself in the head in her apartment above the store after a domestic dispute with her husband, Earl, with whom she owned and operated the market.
