AUSTIN, Texas -- LaMarcus Aldridge had 19 points and 11 rebounds and P.J. Tucker added 18 points in their return to the Texas lineup, sending the Longhorns over Southern in the first round of the Guardians Classic. Tucker, who missed 14 games last season because of grade problems, and Aldridge, who sat out 15 games with a hip injury, got off to a quick start in the opener, hitting 10 of their first 13 shots. Aldridge tied a career high in points and rebounds. Brad Buckman added 16 points for the Longhorns, whose No. 2 ranking ties their highest in school history. Peter Cipriano had 14 points and 10 for Southern.
No. 12 Memphis 79,Wisconsin-Milwaukee 52
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Freshman Shawne Williams and senior Rodney Carney scored 17 points each to help Memphis advance to the second round of the Preseason NIT. Darius Washington added 16 points, and Kareem Cooper had 14 for the Tigers, who held the Panthers to 22-percent shooting and had 11 blocks. Memphis will play No. 15 Alabama in the second round Thursday night. Joah Tucker led Wisconsin-Milwaukee (0-1) with 23 points.
No. 15 Alabama 64, Miami (Ohio) 58
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Chuck Davis had 19 points and nine rebounds in Alabama's season-opening victory in the first round of the Preseason NIT. Steele and Jermareo Davidson finished with 10 points apiece for the Tide. William Hatcher led Miami with 13 points, all in the first half.
No. 20 Iowa 73, Colgate 51
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Greg Brunner scored 16 points and Iowa survived a stretch of ragged play to beat Colgate in the second round of the Guardians Classic. Adam Haluska added 14 points and Jeff Horner 13 for the Hawkeyes (2-0), who advanced to the semifinals against No. 8 Kentucky in Kansas City on Monday night. After trailing by 19 in the first half, Colgate (1-1) hit eight of its first nine shots in the second half and went on a 19-7 run to cut the lead to 49-43. Kendall Chones had 20 points on 9-for-15 shooting for Colgate.
