AKRON -- Brett Biggs carried 28 times for 188 yards and two touchdowns, and Akron's defense dominated Ohio on Tuesday night in a 27-3 win that kept the Zips in the Mid-American Conference East Division race.
Akron (5-5, 4-3) held the Bobcats (4-6, 3-4) to 110 yards, including only 11 rushing on 27 attempts. Ohio passed for 99 yards with one interception, and each of its quarterbacks was sacked twice.
While the Bobcats' ballcarriers couldn't even manage one yard per carry, Biggs got 6.7 per rush, with touchdowns of 2 yards in the first quarter and 4 yards in the third. He also caught six passes for 29 yards.
Luke Getsy was 22-of-32 for 270 yards, including a 55-yard touchdown to Domenik Hixon that gave Akron a 17-3 lead with 8:44 left in the third quarter.
Akron's offense finished with 498 yards.
Jason Swiger added field goals of 22 and 21 yards for the Zips, who can't win the division -- and earn a berth in the MAC championship game -- without help from other teams.
Austen Everson went 8-of-17 for 81 yards and an interception for Ohio. Kalvin McRae ran for 30 yards on 14 carries, but his teammates lost 19 yards on 13 attempts.
Matthew Miller kicked a 34-yard field goal for the Bobcats.
Bowling Green-Miami
OXFORD -- The start of Miami of Ohio's football game against Bowling Green was delayed for 2 1/2 hours Tuesday night because of severe storms.
Yager Stadium was emptied about 30 minutes before the scheduled 7 p.m. kickoff because of lightning strikes in the area, Miami athletic department spokesman Mike Harris said.
Fans took shelter in their cars or nearby Millett Hall, the school's basketball arena, until the stadium was reopened shortly after 9 p.m. The game began at 9:30 p.m.
Miami and Bowling Green entered the game tied for first in the East Division of the Mid-American Conference.
The head coaches for both teams, and administrators from the schools and the MAC, decided to play the game once forecasters informed them the worst weather had passed, Harris said.
The game was not completed in time for today's edition.
Toledo
TOLEDO -- Coach Tom Amstutz agreed to a two-year extension Tuesday, keeping him on the sideline through the 2009 season.
The Rockets have won two Mid-American Conference titles, three MAC West Division championships and appeared in three Motor City bowls since Amstutz took over before the 2001 season. Amstutz is 43-17 in his five seasons.
