YOUNGSTOWN -- Police confiscated two assault rifles, five handguns and two revolvers from a house at 32 E. Judson Ave. on Monday. Seven men were arrested at the residence but were released at the police station. No charges were filed.
A police report said two cruisers went to the area to check a report of two men dressed in black, carrying rifles and chasing another man. Police said they saw two men in black on the porch at the house, each carrying SKS rifles with collapsible stocks. Police secured the area and called for the men inside the residence to come out. All seven did.
Officers also found drug paraphernalia and what they believe to be crack cocaine at the residence, according to the report.
Homicide total drops
YOUNGSTOWN -- For record-keeping as determined by FBI criteria, the city has reduced its homicide total from 32 to 31, Lt. Robin Lees said Monday. The May 22 death of Eric Farmer, 15, of St. Louis Avenue, will be counted as a homicide by the FBI and therefore not the city. Farmer was shot the day before by the store owner during an attempted robbery at Atway's Market on Lexington Avenue.
Building catches fire
YOUNGSTOWN -- A building at Hillman Street and West Ravenwood Avenue caught fire Monday evening. Firefighters were still on the scene at press time, and the Youngstown Fire Department had no other information. A spokeswoman for the department said the building is vacant.
Tractor driver charged
WARREN -- Police have charged the driver of a vintage farm tractor with operating an unsafe vehicle after a collision between the tractor and motorcycles Friday morning just before the Veterans Day Parade. All of the vehicles were to participate in the parade. Reva Montgomery, 54, of Brunstetter Road, Lordstown, was charged after the crash at North Park Avenue and High Street. Police said the tractor broke its steering shaft and hit three motorcycles. Montgomery remains in stable condition in Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital, where motorcyclist Jeff McCaslin, 53, of Howland was treated Friday.
Weathersfield session
MINERAL RIDGE -- Weathersfield Township trustees will meet in regular session at 7 tonight in the township administration building. Trustees rescheduled their meeting from Nov. 8 because of Election Day.
TCTC nursing test
LORDSTOWN -- The School of Practical Nursing at Trumbull Career & amp; Technical Center will administer a pre-entrance test for the January part-time evening program and the August full-time day program at 8 a.m. Wednesday at the Champion facility. The cost is $35, and students must register in advance. They can do so by telephone with a credit card by calling (330) 824-2588. The evening classes begin Jan. 18 and the full-time program starts Aug. 7, 2006.
Union Twp. solicitor
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Attorney Richard Harper has been hired to serve as Union Township solicitor until the January re-organizational meeting. Union Township supervisors met in special session Monday and hired Harper, of New Castle, at $135 per hour to replace Atty. Joseph Kearney, whose resignation they accepted at the same meeting. Harper will work to finalize the new property code and other matters, officials said.
