SEC surprise: Spurrier's team on the way up
THE ORLANDO SENTINEL
Folks in the SEC East should be mighty worried: South Carolina has less talent than Florida, Georgia and Tennessee, yet the Gamecocks beat two of those teams (at home over Florida and at Tennessee) and lost by two at Georgia.
Imagine what Steve Spurrier will be able to do once he gets some talent in Columbia -- guys actually recruited to play his offense instead of Lou Holtz's.
And while it's doubtful South Carolina ever is going to out-recruit all three of those schools in the same year, Spurrier has shown this season that that doesn't really matter.
"It's more fun when your team is not a dominating team," he said after Saturday's victory over the Gators. "It's neat the way our guys are winning. We are defying logic."
Spurrier also said this: "This is what we dreamed about happening. I didn't know if it would be this year. I thought it might be three years down the road."
That last sentence seems like a subtle tweak at the other teams in the division. But, hey, Spurrier never has been afraid to speak his mind.
And how about this: The Gamecocks (7-3, with a game against Clemson this week) could end up in the Peach Bowl. And if Florida State loses to Florida on Nov. 26, then in the ACC Championship Game on Dec. 3, the Seminoles also could end up in the Peach Bowl.
In other words, Spurrier vs. Bobby Bowden, just like the good old days.
