Concert pianist Dana Kristina-Joi Morgan, a Warren native, participated with the Howard University Choral Choir on Oct. 31 on the steps of the Rotunda at the Capitol in Washington, D.C., as family, friends and dignitaries paid their last respects to Rosa Parks, "The Mother of the Civil Rights Movement." On Wednesday, Morgan will perform "The Lord's Prayer" at the Washington Memorial Cathedral, in memory of the late C. Delores Tucker, former president of the National Congress of Black Women. Morgan is third vice chair (youth member) and chartering member of the Silver Spring, Md., chapter. On Dec. 5, Morgan will perform during the Bobby Jones Artist Retreat taping in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The show is scheduled to air 2006 on the Word Network. On Jan. 15, she will appear on BET's "Bobby Jones Gospel Show," which will air at 9 a.m. and noon on the Time Warner Cable Network.
'Nuts' at Mount Union
ALLIANCE -- Mount Union College department of theater will present "Nuts" on Thursday through Saturday at 8 p.m. in the Rodman Playhouse at Mount Union College. "Nuts" takes place in a courtroom in New York's Bellevue Hospital where Claudia Faith Draper fights not to be declared mentally incompetent to stand trial on a manslaughter charge. The state, along with a court-appointed psychiatrist and a prosecutor, say that the incarcerated Draper is "nuts." Claudia, who demonstrates to the judge that she is not crazy, goes off in the end to stand trial on the manslaughter charge. Hoyt exhibit focuseson 'Harlem Renaissance'
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Hoyt Institute of Fine Arts will present "Harlem Renaissance," an exhibit exploring the lives and works of Jacob Lawrence and Romare Bearden from Jan. 8-March 17. The title refers to the flowering of black art, music, theater and literature in the 1920s. Viewers will not only learn about the Harlem Renaissance through these two artists, but will have the opportunity to celebrate it with guest lectures and special events. Hoyt open house
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The Hoyt Institute of Fine Arts will hold an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. next Sunday to give visitors a chance to get acquainted with the arts center and its numerous programs. Exhibits by local artists will be set up, and instructors will fill the classrooms with examples of class work, demonstrations, miniworkshops and holiday items for sale. Demonstrations will be offered in watercolor painting, wine making, handwriting analysis and a variety of art forms. Free tours of the Period House will be given, and information on memberships, rentals and more can be obtained. Gift certificates and original works of art will be for sale. Admission is free. Benefit wine tasting
CANFIELD -- Wines selected by Ohio Wine Imports Co. president Joseph Blumetti will be featured at a Holiday Wine Tasting from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday to benefit homeless and abandoned animals at Angels for Animals. The event will be held in Andrews Hall at Angels for Animals, 4750 State Route 165 in Canfield. Tickets are $20 per person and $35 per couple. Eight wines will be featured, along with hors d'oeuvres and tours of the new Lariccia Animal Center. Jazz concerts moved
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two of the three Youngstown State University Jazz Ensemble concerts previously scheduled in the Chestnut Room of Kilcawley Center have been rescheduled to Stambaugh Auditorium. The following concerts will take place at Stambaugh Auditorium: The Jazz Ensemble 1 and new Caribbean Jazz Ensemble will perform Monday. The Graduate Jazz Quartet and Undergraduate Hard Bop Quintet will perform Wednesday.
The third fall concert featuring the Jazz Ensemble 3, Supersax Jazz Group and a Jazz Combo will remain at the Chestnut Room on Nov. 21. All concerts will begin at 8 p.m. and are free and open to the public.
