Area boxing
PITTSBURGH -- Youngstown middleweight Darnell Boone, co-managed by Tank DiCioccio and Jack Loew from Youngstown's Southside Boxing Club, used a devastating combination attack to stop previously undefeated Chris Archer after the fourth round of a scheduled six-rounder at Heinz Field's grandstand Friday night.
The card, promoted by Iron City Promotions with Jim Cvetic the promoter, was dedicated to the veterans in the Pittsburgh area on Veterans Day. Boone (6-2-1) stopped his fourth opponent when Archer (4-1) failed to answer the bell for the fifth round.
From the opening bell, Boone was the aggressor, tagging Archer, from Tarentum, Pa., repeatedly with straight rights and left hooks that came off a strong left jab. In the fourth round, after hurting Archer with a series of punches, the referee gave the Keystone fighter a standing eight count.
"I was ready for this fight and worked well with my punches on this guy," said Boone, who took the fight on short notice.
Added Loew, who has trained Boone since his days as an amateur, "Darnell was sharp, very strong and showed great patience tonight."
Two Warren boxers, both managed by Warren's Chuck Bayley, split a pair of fights on the card. Heavyweight Zack Page lost a unanimous decision to Pittsburgh's Tim Williamson in the eight-round main event. Page (9-4) had problems with the southpaw slants of Williamson (15-1) and seemed to lack aggressiveness in what was a dull fight. The other Warren boxer, welterweight Rasheen Daniels (3-7) proved the third time was the right time as he won a unanimous six-round decision over previously undefeated Jose Caraballo with all three judges voting 58-56 for Daniels.
Caraballo (4-1), a Sharpsburg, Pa. native, had won two previous fights with Daniels, the last a four-round split decision, but Rasheen had good hand speed in firing quick combinations.
Daniels had Caraballo off balance throughout the fight, keeping his left jab in Jose's face as his defense was near perfect.
