Wrong Carcelli named in sentencing story
YOUNGSTOWN -- Because of an error by The Vindicator, Robert Carcelli was wrongly identified in Friday's issue as having been convicted of a charge of unlawful interest in a public contract. In actuality, it was his brother, Ronald A. Carcelli, 52, who was convicted. The Vindicator regrets the error.
Judge Maureen A. Cronin of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court sentenced Ronald A. Carcelli, a former Struthers street department foreman, to a year's probation and ordered him to pay $5,000 to the city of Struthers. Thursday's sentence also included a six-month suspended jail sentence and a $1,000 fine.
The county prosecutor's office said Ronald Carcelli took bribes, and the city was billed for asphalt that was not used.
Robert Carcelli, a former Struthers councilman and now council president, finds it frustrating that his name keeps coming up in news reports involving his brother.
This is not the first time, he said yesterday, that he has been mentioned in his brother's case over the three years it has made its way through the legal system.
"My family and I are getting calls from everyone," Carcelli said. "I have never been interviewed by any governmental agency in this matter. I didn't do anything wrong. I was never asked to provide any records by any law enforcement agency."
He said his name was mentioned by others in the city administration during the investigation of his brother as a way "to destroy me politically."
