Name: John Garland.Age: 61.Childhood: Reared in New York's East Harlem.Military: Joined U.S. Marine Corps in 1962 at age 17; saw duty in Central America, Purple Heart for wounds suffered in Vietnam; honorably discharged 1967.Education: Bachelor's degree, political science, Central State; law degree, Ohio State University; postgraduate work at Harvard University and Duke University.Experience: Founded Legal Services of the Coastal Plains in North Carolina in 1979; 1988-91, general counsel and professor, University of the District of Columbia; 1991-97, administrator, University of Virginia; 1997-present, principal, Central State University.
