Abby Alter's work goes beyond dance, movement and art. She has studied remote viewing with David Morehouse and uses the meditation sequence in her teaching.
"Morehouse was drafted into a CIA program called Stargate using this psychic technique to spy on the Russians," said Alter. "It allows you to retain information that you see, and to travel with your mind, like journeying or astral travel. I was skeptical when I took the class, but this guy is the real deal. Stargate was eventually disbanded when the names of the U.S. spies were leaked, but Morehouse now trains people in this technique."
Alter said that her class was made up of about 35 people, half of whom were policeman, who have to learn to use their intuition. "What is key is the way we were taught to write things down while in trance," she said. "It was fascinating, but a lot of people don't understand, and are terrified. I use this technique to set up movement situations and have the dancers make mental connections. It is like watching fish swim, or a flock of birds -- how they all move together as a group. This creates an amplification of energy."
GIFT TO COMMUNITY PROJECT
Every year, Alter offers a free course to anyone in the community, whether or not they have ability or experience in the arts. It runs for ten weeks, from 2 pm to 5 pm on Sundays, ending with a public performance. "It is a movement-based class, but what we do is determined by the talents of the people that participate," Alter said. "I start with an idea, and the 'Aha' comes later. We do warm-ups, dance movements, breathwork and energy work, but there may also be singing or other live music. The performance is multi-media. One year I had teachers, computer programmers, chemists. I had a donkey skeleton, and everybody picked a bone. Each bone relates to another bone, so we created relationships between people." Alter said she likes to get a wide range of ages, and stresses the ritual, sacred aspect of dance. "At our last performance, the audience began to sob," Alter said. "The movements are intention manifested. People are moved when they experience truths."
